Affandi

Sometimes, when Affandi had sold his painting, he would look at the blank wall occasionally where the painting had been hung, and feel the desire to draw the same subject matter again to fill the empty space. He observed everything around him, and for once he spotted a dying bamboo which was bare and no longer green. He felt empathetic about it and painted "The Suffering Bamboo". Perhaps, it is all because of his passion to paint and the overwhelming emotions that he had that made himself one of the well known artist of the world for his expressionic paintings.

I find Affandi's artworks very bold and expressive, especially his oil paintings. The smearing of paints with his fingers, palms, wrists and back of his hands is indeed a very unique technique that brings his artworks alive. He also used bold, contrasting colours in his painting, for example, in Tiga Expresi Affandi,1979 and his Self-Portrait, 1975. The other similarity of these two paintings besides the contrasting colours he used is the irregular lines and expressive strokes that contribute to the abstract aspect of these two paintings.

Dead, 1987

One of my favorite paintings by Affandi is "Dead", 1987. I find the colour of this painting very different from the other Affandi's artworks as the colour in this painting is not as bright, vibrant and contrasting. Only a single brown, earthy tone is used and the atmosphere created makes the paintings seem dripping, dropping and moving downwards. The gloomy feeling is created by the ghost like apparition of Affandi's face and the dead chicken hanging upside down. By putting himself beside the dead chicken, Affandi might be telling us that all living things would have their lives ended-that's written in our destiny, and that also includes himself.
Affandi died in 1990 and that is just 3 years after he had painted this. This fact may tell us that he was not afraid of talking on the topic of "death" in his 80's, which is likely to be a sensitive topic to him.

Summary of Letters from Vincent

Style
- Vincent Vang Gogh painted fruit trees in blossom in April, 1888
-being innovative, used only black and white
- converting his message to the letters
- not drawing everything he saw
- expressing sincere human feeling
- draw what he sees with his own eyes
- do painting like writing, draw figures from memories
- everything is simplifies, not chaotic, for example: draw gesture and not the hand draw the expression and not the face
- inspired by japanese art

Brushwork
- following no system of brushwork at all
- leaving spots of uncovered canvas, to create feeling of reworking, roughness
- always worked directly on the spot
- capturing the essence in the drawing
- filling the spaces demarcated by outlines
- painted slowly and patiently would cause distraction

Using of Colours
- using simplified tints in different tones
- exaggerating colours
- bold contasting colours, like yellow and violet
- working excessively fast to capture the intensity of thought than calmness of touch that people are
 looking for

Making changes to the subject
-enlarging, simplifying and arranging colours of real objects

Philosophy
- Although lots of people or great lines of landscapes are practical way to draw but they are too dry
  and should be skipped
- Accurate drawing, accurate colours reality which is just like a photo

just some thoughts about art..

Every few decades has its very own art movement. From Renaissaune to Impressionism, from cubism to pop art, these art movements are significant evidences of the changes of society in the past and how people changed their perspectives of looking at this world. However, we no longer follow any art movement nowadays as everyone is painting whatever they want, whatever they define as art. The defination of art is being blurred and the diversity of styles is growing in an overwhelming manner.

Art used to be an luxury item in the olden days, where only the rich and upper class people could afford it. However nowadays, it seems to have gone thru a evolution that made it so common that we see them almost every day in our lives. Olden art needs a lot of time and effort while modern arts can be done just by a few clicking of mouse in a few minutes. Would art become meaningless in few years later when we became more concern about technology (or maybe global warming) than any other stuffs? Or would there even left a single artist who is willing to dedicate his/her life creating artworks in this dog-eat-dog era? It's a fast paced society that we are lived in. I believe still life sculptures or 2 dimentioanl canvas paintings can no longer capture the eyes of people that easily anymore. Would that mean there will be a rise of performing art or digital art in the near future?

I started to feel that Art should not be made one of the optional subjects in school. Instead, we should have art lesson at least once a fortnight like Civics and Moral in every classes at every levels because i find appreciating art is generally quite important. It allows people to think with our imagination and understading the past/current events or trends through artworks created around the world.
